Texas OT and OTA License Renewal: CE Requirements, Explained
Texas occupational therapists (OTs) and occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) renew their licenses every two years, and each renewal needs 24 contact hours of continuing education. Here is what counts, what is required, and how to prove it.
When does a Texas OT license renew?
Every two years, by the end of your birth month. You can submit your renewal up to three months before your license expires.
How many CE hours do Texas OTs and OTAs need?
24 contact hours every two years, for OTs and OTAs alike. The hours must be completed while your license is current. One hour of continuing education equals one contact hour, and partial hours count.
Is there a required topic?
Yes, one. Every renewal must include a human trafficking training course approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). It counts toward your 24 hours, up to a maximum of 2 contact hours. The rules do not set a minimum length for the course.
Do my courses have to be board-approved?
No. Apart from the HHSC human trafficking course, the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners does not pre-approve courses or require that they come from a particular approving body. Courses must cover professional development that protects the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
Online and home-study courses count hour for hour on program content, with no cap. Breaks, meals, introductions, and pre or post tests do not count.
Can I repeat a course?
Each continuing education activity counts only once in two renewal cycles. The one exception is the human trafficking course: you may repeat it in the next renewal period for up to 2 contact hours.
What else does renewal require?
You must pass the Texas OT jurisprudence exam: an open-book, 20-question online test on the Occupational Therapy Practice Act and Rules. You can download the Act and Rules and use them during the exam.
Since September 1, 2026, the board also requires your Social Security number to renew.
Who reports my CE hours?
You do. Texas does not collect completions from course providers. When you renew, you list your courses on the board's CE Submission Form and confirm which course meets the human trafficking requirement.
The board audits a random sample of licensees. If you are selected, you have 30 days to send your documentation. Keep your certificates for four years from the end of the expiration month of the renewal period they were used for.
How much does it cost to renew?
The state renewal fee for an active license is $248 for an OT and $184 for an OTA. This is separate from what you pay for continuing education.
If you renew late, you pay the renewal fee plus a late fee: half the renewal fee if you are 90 days late or less, and the full renewal fee again if you are more than 90 days but less than a year late. Once your license expires, stop practicing until it is renewed. After one year expired, you can no longer renew and must apply for restoration instead.
