Texas Barber License Renewal CE Requirements

Most Texas barber licensees must complete four hours of TDLR-approved continuing education every two years to renew. The required mix is one hour of sanitation, one hour of human trafficking awareness, and two hours in approved subjects. If you have held the Texas license for at least 15 years, the requirement is reduced to two hours.[1]

Steps to complete your CE

  1. Check which hour requirement applies. The standard renewal path requires four hours every two years. A person who has held the Texas license for at least 15 years only needs the two mandatory hours.[1]
  2. Take the mandatory coursework. All covered barber licensees need one hour in sanitation and one hour in human trafficking awareness. On the standard four-hour path, the other two hours may cover subjects listed in Rule 83.202, sanitation, Texas barbering and cosmetology law and rules, or mental health awareness.[1]
  3. Confirm that the course is approved. Your CE must be department-approved. TDLR does not give credit for taking the same course more than once, and each CE hour represents 50 minutes of instruction.[1]
  4. Keep your certificate. The provider must issue a completion certificate within 15 days after the course. Keep your copy for two years after completion because TDLR may request it.[1]
  5. Renew with TDLR. Submit the individual license renewal through TDLR after satisfying the CE requirement. Taking the course does not itself renew the license.[2]

For the full step-by-step renewal process, see our Texas barber license renewal guide.

RenewEd CE offers the full four-hour TDLR-approved barber course and reports completion to TDLR within 24 hours after you finish and pay. See the current price on the course page.

Frequently asked questions

How often do Texas barbers need CE?

The requirement applies every two years when the license is renewed.[1]

Do barbers need a human trafficking course?

Yes. One hour of human trafficking awareness is part of both the four-hour standard path and the reduced two-hour path.[1]

Who qualifies for the two-hour requirement?

A licensee who has held the Texas license for at least 15 years. That person still needs one hour of sanitation and one hour of human trafficking awareness.[1]

Can I use the same course at my next renewal?

No. TDLR does not award credit for attending the same course more than once.[1]

Who reports the course to TDLR?

The continuing education provider files the completion report electronically. You should still keep your certificate for two years as your own record.[1]
