How Many CE Hours Does a Texas Electrician Need to Renew?

Texas apprentice, journeyman, and master electricians each need four hours of TDLR-approved continuing education before every license renewal. An apprentice may instead be enrolled in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course, and someone renewing multiple electrician license types still needs only four total hours for the applicable renewal period.[1]

Steps to meet the requirement

  1. Identify your license type. Master electricians, journeyman electricians, and apprentice electricians are all on TDLR's list of licenses requiring four CE hours before each renewal. Other listed electrical licenses also require four hours. Contractors and residential appliance installers are not required to complete electrician CE.[1]
  2. Complete the hours during the correct period. Your course must be completed within the term of the license being renewed. Hours from outside that license term do not satisfy the renewal requirement.[1]
  3. Use a registered provider. The course must come from a registered TDLR provider. An unapproved course will not count, even if it covers electrical subjects.[1]
  4. Cover all required topics. The four hours must address the National Electrical Code, Texas electrician law, Texas administrative rules for electricians, and NFPA 70E electrical safety. TDLR does not accept partial completion.[1]
  5. Save the certificate and renew separately. Keep your completion certificate for one year. Your provider reports the course, but you must still submit the license renewal through TDLR.[1][2]

RenewEd CE offers the required four-hour online electrician course and reports completion to TDLR within 24 hours after you finish and pay. See the current price on the course page.

Frequently asked questions

Do apprentices, journeymen, and masters need different numbers of hours?

No. Each needs four hours before every renewal.[1]

Do I need eight hours if I hold both journeyman and master licenses?

No. A person holding multiple electrician license types needs four total hours, but the course must fall within the period of the license being renewed.[1]

Is an apprentice exempt while enrolled in training?

An apprentice may use enrollment in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course instead of the four CE hours.[1]

Can I repeat last year's course?

No. TDLR does not grant CE credit for attending the same course more than once.[1]

Does a contractor license require these four hours?

No. TDLR states that electrical contractors are not required to complete continuing education, although an individual electrician license held by the same person may have its own four-hour requirement.[1]
