How to Renew an Apprentice Electrician License in Texas
A Texas apprentice electrician must complete four hours of TDLR-approved continuing education before each license renewal, unless the apprentice is enrolled in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course. The continuing education must be completed during the term of the license being renewed.[1]
Steps to renew
- Check your license expiration date. Complete your renewal requirements before the current license term ends. TDLR only counts continuing education completed within the term of the license being renewed.[1]
- Choose the correct education path. Complete four hours of continuing education from a registered TDLR provider, or confirm that you are enrolled in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course. Unapproved courses do not count.[1]
- Make sure the CE covers every required subject. The four hours must address the National Electrical Code, Texas electrician law, Texas electrician administrative rules, and NFPA 70E electrical safety. TDLR does not award partial credit, and you cannot receive credit for taking the same course more than once.[1]
- Keep your completion certificate. Your provider issues the certificate and reports the completion to TDLR. Keep the certificate for one year after completion in case TDLR requests it.[1]
- Renew with TDLR. Use TDLR's electrician renewal page to open the Apprentice Electrician renewal process. Completing CE does not itself renew the license.[2]
RenewEd CE offers a four-hour, TDLR-approved online electrician course for apprentices and reports completion to TDLR within 24 hours after you finish and pay. See the current price on the course page.
Frequently asked questions
How many CE hours does a Texas apprentice electrician need?
Four hours before each renewal, unless the apprentice is enrolled in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course.[1]
Can I take any online electrician course?
No. The provider and course must be registered with TDLR, and the course must cover all required subjects.[1]
Can I finish only part of a course and receive partial credit?
No. TDLR does not accept partial course completion, although a provider may let you pause and finish later.[1]
How long should I keep my certificate?
Keep it for one year after the completion date.[1]
Does finishing CE renew my apprentice license automatically?
No. The course satisfies the education requirement, but you must still complete the Apprentice Electrician renewal process through TDLR and submit the information and state fee required for that renewal.[2]
